The catalog of the exhibition Conoscere la Biblioteca Vaticana, una storia aperta al futuro (“Knowing the Vatican Library, a story open to the future”, Vatican City, Braccio di Carlo Magno, November 11, 2010 - March 13, 2011) is a collaborative effort by the entire staff of the Library.
The first half of the volume consists of contributions which intend not only to introduce the exhibition, but also to examine all aspects of the life of the Library, from its historical origins to the characteristics of its individual departments, from the services offered in the earliest times to the present day, examining the activities that take place daily and presneting projects which are currently under construction.
The second part is made up of the catalogue of the works on display. The descriptions have been written by experts from the Library, each of which dealt with the materials coming under their own competence: manuscripts, archival documents, ancient and modern printed books, prints, drawings, photographs, paintings, coins and medals, for a total of 230 works, each of which is reproduced photographically. The descriptions offer technical information for specialists, but also descriptions understandable to a wider audience.
